executive summary

This research examined whether mobile and modular abattoirs could improve access to livestock processing and strengthen Ontario’s local meat sector. Drawing on interviews and experiences from five North American jurisdictions, the study found that mobile processing can be safe and viable when supported by demonstrated demand, adaptable regulations and strong coordination.

The greatest potential was identified in underserved areas of Northern Ontario, where producers face long distances and limited access to processing facilities.
